Jan Skopgraaf
Jack of Spades

Mordegai Vermeulen
werk sy hele lewe
vir Skopgraaf ondernemers.

Mordegai Vermeulen has worked for  Spade Undertakers his whole life long.

En sy vrou het hy verloor
want sy kon dit net nie meer hou
met die ewige swart klere.

And he lost his wife because she just could not stand the everlasting black clothes any more

Ja, klere, klere sal ons dra
so blink en mooi en fraai,
totdat Jan Skopgraaf ons kom haal.

Yes, we shall wear clothes, clothes shiny-new and pretty,
until Jack Spade comes to fetch us

En toe Mordegai nog jonk was,
was hy baie gou beindruk
deur die mag wat geld vir mense bring.

And when Mordegaai was still young he was easily impressed by the power money gives to people.

In hul waansin en hul gierigheid
wil hulle sommer die  Koninkryk
koop met geld van papier.

In their insanity and avarice they just go ahead and try to buy the Kingdom with paper money.

Ja geld, geld laat die aarde draai.
Op die vlaktes van Transvaal
staan die dobbelpaleise,
Babilonkatedraal.

Yes - money, money makes the world go round.
On the  wide plains of Transvaal stand the gambling palaces, cathedrals of Babylon.

Die winter het gekom,
die veld staan leeg en vaal.
Koud is die windjie en skraal.
Mordegai en Jan Skopgraaf kom jou haal.

Winter has come, the veld is empty and without colour. A chill, icy wind is blowing.
Mordegai and Jack Spade will get you.

Maar deesdae pla niks hom meer veel nie
veral nadat hy sy eie neef
en die predikant
moes begrawe
en die rykste man op die dorp
en die weerprofeet en wie weet,
dalk 'n moordenaar of twee.

But these days nothing bothers him much any more, especially since he's had to bury his own cousin , and the minister, and the richest man in town, and the man who could tell you the weather, and , who knows, a murderer or two.

Een twee drie, ja so stap ons aan
maar almal in 'n enkelbaan,
stadig op pad,
op pad na die noorde.
Mordegai en Jan Skopgraaf kom jou haal

Yes - one, two, three, we are moving along, but all of us in a single lane, slowly heading north.
Mordegai and Jack Spade will get you.
